Dual degree? Double degree? Double Major? What are the differences?

Dual degree? Double degree? Double Major? What are the differences?

If you have completed your Grade 12 qualifications (such as STPM, A-Levels, Foundation, etc.) and are preparing to pursue a Bachelor’s degree at a local or overseas university, there is one crucial step you need to take before locking in your major: understanding the differences between a Dual Degree, a Double Degree, and a Double Major. Whether your future career path will be an uphill battle or smooth sailing all the way depends heavily on this very choice.

Dual Degree

A Dual Degree (also known as a joint degree or dual-award program) allows students to complete their academic studies across two different universities, graduating with two separate degree certificates—one from each institution. You might wonder: why go through the hassle of studying the same major at two different universities? The answer lies in global opportunities and specialized resources. Many universities establish cross-institutional partnerships to offer students the best of both worlds. Whether it’s experiencing a different learning culture abroad or gaining access to unique academic support that only a specific campus can provide, a dual degree offers an enriched educational journey.

An Example: Drew University (USA)

Drew University, a prestigious liberal arts institution in the United States, offers unique pathway programs such as 3+2, 4+1, and 3+3 bachelor's programs. Take their 3+2 program as an example: students spend their first 3 years at Drew University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS), and then transfer to their partner institution, Columbia University, for 2 years to complete a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. This 5-year pathway is perfect for students who want a well-rounded liberal arts education while securing a top-tier engineering degree.

(Note: Apart from Columbia University’s Engineering degree, Drew University also collaborates with other partner universities across various specializations. For more details, feel free to contact Dadi Education.)

Double Degree

A Double Degree allows you to pursue two entirely independent degrees at the same time, earning two separate certificates upon graduation. While it does take an extra year or two compared to a standard single degree, it's a powerful way to master two distinct fields—such as Business and Law, Health Sciences, or Science and Engineering—giving you a massive competitive edge in the job market.

An Example: Griffith University (Australia)

Ranked in the top 2% of universities globally, Griffith University is a premier public research institution renowned for its academic excellence. One of their most popular combinations is the Bachelor of Laws (Honours) / Bachelor of Business double degree. This 5-year program seamlessly blends legal expertise with sharp business strategy. Students will dive deep into core business areas like management, marketing, and finance, while simultaneously mastering the pillars of law—including criminal, contract, property, company, tort, and jurisprudence.

(Note: Beyond the Law and Business combo, Griffith University offers a wide range of other double degree options. To find the perfect match for your goals, reach out to Dadi Education for a chat!)

Double Major

A Double Major is the most common and straightforward option. It allows you to specialize in two distinct areas of study while working toward a single Bachelor’s degree. Most universities offer this pathway, and some of the most popular combinations include: Business & IT, Psychology & Marketing, Finance & Economics, Computer Science & Business, and Mass Communication & Public Relations.

An Example: University of Otago (New Zealand)

As New Zealand’s second-ranked university, the University of Otago holds the highest possible international rating for educational quality, with multiple subjects ranking in the global Top 1%. To cater to diverse student interests, Otago offers structured double major degrees including the Bachelor of Arts and Commerce (BACom), Bachelor of Arts and Science (BASc), and Bachelor of Commerce and Science (BComSc). Students can mix and match from hundreds of subjects to customize a 4-year degree that perfectly aligns with their passions, strengths, and career aspirations.
